Can you back out of a Pokémon GO trade before it's final, or decline a remote trade request?

↩️4 min read · Updated

Short answer: yes, in both cases nothing is final until you actively confirm it. A standard trade only completes once both trainers tap Confirm on the Stardust screen - walking away or closing out beforehand cancels nothing because nothing was sent yet. A Remote Trade goes further: either Forever Friend can tap Decline at any point in the tag → wish-list → offer sequence, which restarts the process instead of canceling a trade already made.

Trading is the one Pokémon GO interaction where a mis-tap can cost a one-of-a-kind catch forever - see trading basics for why a traded Pokémon can never be traded back. So it's worth knowing exactly where the "point of no return" sits for each trade type, and that it's later than most players assume.

Standard (in-person) trades: confirm is the only point of no return

In a normal trade - both trainers level 10+, friends, within about 100 m - each side picks the Pokémon they're offering, then a confirmation screen shows the Stardust cost. The trade only goes through once both trainers tap Confirm on that screen. Up to that tap, nothing has been sent or exchanged, so backing out is just a matter of not confirming: close the trade screen or pick a different Pokémon instead. There's no separate "Decline" button here the way there is in a Remote Trade - the confirm requirement itself is what lets you back out.

What you can't do is undo a trade after both sides confirm. Trading basics covers this already: each Pokémon can only ever be traded once, so a confirmed trade has no take-backs short of asking your friend to trade it back to you as a brand-new trade.

Remote Trades: an explicit Decline at every step

Forever Friends remote trades use a longer tag → wish-list → offer → confirm flow precisely because there's more back-and-forth before anything is final. That flow gives either trainer the option to decline the current request and restart the process at any point along the way - not just at the last confirm screen. Declining doesn't cancel an existing trade (nothing is traded yet); it just resets that exchange back to an earlier step so you can try again with a different pick.

The final confirm screen still works the same way as a standard trade: both trainers review the one-for-one match and must actively confirm before anything moves. Decline-and-restart is the extra safety valve Remote Trades have that standard trades don't need, because there are more steps where a wrong pick could otherwise lock you in.

Why this matters

Trade scams rely on trainers confirming before they've actually looked at what they're receiving - a renamed or wrong-form Pokémon swapped in at the last second. Knowing that nothing is final until your own tap of Confirm means there's no reason to rush: re-check the Pokémon on the confirmation screen, and if anything looks off, back out. For a remote trade, that also means you can restart as many times as it takes to get the pick you actually want from a Forever Friend's wish list.

FAQ

Can I cancel a trade after both of us confirm? No. Once both trainers tap Confirm, the trade is final and the Pokémon has changed hands - see trading basics for why a traded Pokémon can never be traded back.

Does declining a Remote Trade request use up my one remote trade for the day? No - declining just resets that exchange to an earlier step. You haven't traded anything, so your daily remote trade allowance is untouched. See how the remote trade process works for the full step-by-step.

If I back out of a standard trade, does it affect my friendship with that trainer? No. Backing out before confirming isn't a logged interaction - it's as if the trade screen was never opened.

Is there a "cancel" button, or do I just close the app or walk away? For a standard trade, simply not tapping Confirm (closing the screen or picking a different Pokémon) is enough. For a Remote Trade, there's an actual Decline option built into the flow - use that instead of force-closing the app mid-trade.

Can my trade partner see that I declined or backed out? The sources describing this process don't document a scam-style report mechanic for a declined trade - it's treated as a normal, expected part of trading, not an event the game flags.
