Short answer: yes — nothing in Pokémon GO blocks a friendship with someone abroad. Adding a friend, sending gifts, and pinning postcards all work at any distance from day one. Only trading (roughly 100 m in person, unless you're Forever Friends) and some raid mechanics carry their own rules. An international friend list unlocks Vivillon progress, round-the-clock raid invites, and eventually remote trades for regional Pokémon.

How to play Pokémon GO with a friend in another country
Most of what makes Pokémon GO social — codes, gifts, raids — was built to work across borders. The confusion is usually about which features need you to be nearby and which don't. Here's the honest breakdown, by feature.
Works instantly, from anywhere
- Becoming friends. Add by trainer code or QR code — there's no country check. This is the entire point of finding codes by country.
- Gifts and postcards. No distance limit, one gift per friend per day, and every gift carries a postcard from wherever it was spun. See gifts & postcards for the full limits.
- Vivillon progress. Pin 3 postcards from a region to unlock your first Scatterbug pattern from there, then 9, then 15. This is why players specifically seek out friends in countries they don't have yet — see Vivillon patterns by country.
- Friendship level and XP. Gifting, raiding and battling together all count the same whether your friend lives next door or across the planet — see friendship levels & XP.
- Remote raids. Invite up to 5 friends at a time into a raid lobby, no friendship level required, up to 10 Remote Raid Passes a day. See remote raids with friends for the invite rules and current limits.
Needs more than a friend request
- Trading. A normal trade needs both trainers within about 100 m — an abroad friend can't trade with you that way. The exception is Forever Friends: once you've reached that level (180 days of daily interaction), you unlock one remote trade a day. See trading basics and how Forever Friends remote trades work.
- Regional Pokémon. An international friend genuinely can get you a region-exclusive Pokémon like Farfetch'd or Kangaskhan — but only in person nearby, or remotely once you're Forever Friends. Full list and rules in regional Pokémon via friends.
Why bother building an international list
Two reasons stand above the rest. First, Vivillon is one of the only Pokémon in the game you can't realistically complete with only local friends — its 18 patterns are tied to real-world regions. Second, time zones work in your favor for raids: a friend who's awake while you're asleep (or vice versa) can invite you into a legendary raid lobby the moment it spawns, and you can return the favor on their schedule. Neither benefit needs you to know the person — a code from the front page or a specific country on /codes is enough to start.
FAQ
Can you become Pokémon GO friends with someone in another country? Yes. Add them by trainer code or QR code exactly like anyone local — there's no distance or country restriction on sending or accepting a friend request.
What can you do with an abroad friend without ever meeting in person? Send gifts, pin postcards toward Vivillon, raise your friendship level, and invite each other into remote raids. None of those need distance or a shared time zone.
Can you trade with a friend abroad right away? No. A normal trade needs you both within about 100 m. You can trade remotely once you're Forever Friends (180 days of daily interaction), limited to one remote trade a day.
Do time zones actually help? Yes — an international friend circle means someone is usually awake to pull you into a raid lobby, and you can do the same for them later.
Where do I find friends from a specific country? Use /codes, filtered by country, rather than a generic board — codes there are organized by where the trainer actually is.
