Short answer: a Sponsored Gift balloon is a solo, ad-funded freebie that appears randomly on the map and opens with a tap - no friend involved, no postcard, no 7 km egg. A regular gift comes from a friend, carries their postcard, and only opens once you've spun it or they've sent it to you. They share the word "gift" but are two unrelated systems.

What's the difference between a Sponsored Gift balloon and a friend's gift in Pokémon GO?
If you've seen a balloon floating on the map offering an item, and wondered whether it's the same kind of gift your friends send you, it isn't. Here's what actually separates the two.
Sponsored Gift balloons: the basics
- They appear randomly on the Map View, paired with a sponsored message from a third party.
- Tap the balloon, then tap Open Gift to see the message. The items — things like Berries and Stardust — are added to your inventory while the message plays. Tap Learn More for sponsor details, then tap the X to close it once the message ends or a few seconds pass.
- They can't be sent to friends — they go straight into your own inventory, and nobody levels up from them.
- They carry no postcard, so they don't count toward Vivillon progress or anything in gifts & postcards.
Why they're restricted
- Trainer Level 9 or higher is required to see them at all.
- Some balloons need extra device support: camera permission, iOS 15+/Android 7+, or 2,600 MB of device memory.
- Child accounts never receive Sponsored Gift balloons — this stays off even if a parent has granted sponsored-content permissions through the Niantic Kids Parent Portal or Pokémon Trainer Central. See trainer codes and kids for the rest of what's switched off by default on a child account.
- You can opt out entirely: turn off "Show sponsored messages from third-party advertising services" in Settings. This doesn't touch gifts from Gyms or PokéStops.

FAQ
Do Sponsored Gifts count toward my daily gift-opening limit? Niantic's FAQ doesn't tie them to the 30-gift daily opening cap that applies to friend gifts — they're a separate, unlimited-by-that-rule system since they aren't sent by anyone.
Can I send a Sponsored Gift to a friend? No — they're described as going straight to the Trainer who opens the balloon, with no send option.
Why don't I ever see these balloons? You're likely under Trainer Level 9, on a child account (which never gets them), or you've turned off third-party sponsored messages in Settings.
Do they ever contain a 7 km Egg? No — eggs are a friend-gift exclusive, not part of the Sponsored Gift item pool.
Want more actual friend gifts? One tap on the front page gets you a fresh, unused trainer code — add a few and start trading gifts the normal way.
