Short answer: 45, up from 35. Niantic's New Year's 2026 event permanently raised the guaranteed-Lucky trade cap - the count of Lucky Pokémon you can bank through trading alone - from 35 to 45, and added a second rule: a Pokémon that's been sitting in your storage since 2020 is now guaranteed to become Lucky when traded, up to that same 45 cap. The random per-trade Lucky roll described in the Lucky Egg/Star Piece myth guide is unaffected - this is a separate, age-based guarantee layered on top.

What actually changed
Pokémon GO has long guaranteed a Lucky Pokémon when you trade something old enough, as a backstop on top of the normal random Lucky roll. Until the end of 2025, that guarantee topped out once a trainer had banked 35 trading-based Lucky Pokémon. The New Year's 2026 event (December 31, 2025 - January 4, 2026) raised that ceiling to 45, and Niantic's announcement stated the change is permanent - it didn't revert when the event ended.
The same update added a standing rule: trade a Pokémon that's been in your storage since 2020, and it's guaranteed to come out Lucky, as long as you haven't already hit the 45 cap. This sits alongside the older age-tiered guarantees for even longer-held Pokémon (for example, 2016-era catches) - the 2020 rule simply extended the guarantee to a newer, much larger pool of eligible Pokémon.
What this doesn't change
- The per-trade random Lucky roll - the ordinary chance any trade turns Lucky based on how long you've held the Pokémon - works exactly as before. The 45 cap only limits the guaranteed trades, not the random ones, which keep happening even after you've hit it.
- Lucky Friends - the Best Friends-triggered mechanic that guarantees your next trade turns Lucky - is unrelated and has no cap tied to it. See how Lucky Friends actually triggers.
- Items. Neither a Lucky Egg nor a Star Piece touches any of this - see the full myth guide if you've heard otherwise.
- The 12/12/12 IV floor and halved power-up cost that come with any Lucky Pokémon are unchanged - see the trading basics guide for the full IV re-roll rules.
Why the cap exists at all
The guarantee is there so trainers who trade a lot of old Pokémon don't end up swimming in Lucky Pokémon indefinitely from guarantees alone - once you've banked 45 that way, further old trades still carry the normal random chance, they just stop auto-guaranteeing. Raising it from 35 to 45 gives long-time players more headroom, especially now that a much younger pool (anything from 2020) also qualifies for the guarantee.
FAQ
Is the 45 cap permanent, or does it reset to 35 after an event? Niantic's announcement describes it as a permanent change, not a temporary event bonus - it stayed in place after New Year's 2026 ended.
Does the cap apply to Lucky Friends trades too? No. The 45 cap is specific to the age-based guaranteed-Lucky mechanic on ordinary trades. Lucky Friends guarantees work independently and aren't limited by this cap.
If I traded a 2020 Pokémon and I'm already at 45 guaranteed Luckies, do I still get a Lucky? No - once you've hit the cap, the guarantee stops applying. The trade can still turn Lucky through the normal random roll, just not the guaranteed one.
Where can I check how many guaranteed Luckies I've used? The game doesn't expose that counter directly to players; it's tracked server-side. Treat the cap as a ceiling on guarantees rather than a number you can look up in-app.
