Short answer: there's no single right number, but most of the game's daily rewards cap out long before a big friend list does. You can only open 30 gifts and complete one special trade a day no matter how many friends you have, so a lean list of active gifters usually beats a packed list of strangers. The hard ceiling is 550-650 slots; the practical ceiling is however many friends you can realistically interact with before bed.

How many friends should you have in Pokémon GO?
"How many friends do I need" sounds like it should have one answer, but Pokémon GO never gives you a single leaderboard number to chase. Instead, a handful of daily caps quietly set the real limit - and once you know them, picking a list size is just arithmetic.
The caps that actually limit you
None of these scale with friend-list size, which is exactly why a bigger list has diminishing returns:
- Opening gifts: 30 a day. You can hold up to 20 gifts in your bag (more at high Trainer level), but even with 200 friends sending you one each, you can only open 30. See the full gifts & postcards limits.
- Special trades: 1 a day, account-wide - the trade that actually matters for Stardust savings and new Pokédex entries. See the Stardust cost table.
- Raid invites: 5 at a time per lobby. You can invite more after a short cooldown, but a single friend's raid only needs a handful of people from your list - see remote raids with friends.
- Weekly Challenge groups: 4 Trainers, whether you fill it with friends or matchmade strangers.
- Remote trades (Forever Friends): 1 a day, account-wide, regardless of how many Forever Friends you have banked up.
Every one of these is a flat daily number. Past the point where you have enough active friends to fill them, extra friends mostly sit idle.
Why a bigger list still helps, up to a point
A larger list isn't pointless - it just pays off in different ways than raw gifting volume:
- More Lucky Friends rolls running in parallel. Each Best Friend gives you one daily shot at a Lucky Friends trigger, so more long-term friendships mean more rolls per day - this is the one place where "more friends" scales cleanly.
- Country variety for Vivillon patterns and regional postcards - you need specific countries represented, not just a high count.
- Time-zone coverage for raids - friends asleep in your time zone can still invite you to raids on the other side of the world.
- A buffer against inactive friends. Some of any list goes quiet over time; a slightly larger active core means the caps above stay full even after a few people stop playing.
A rough sweet spot
For a casual-to-active player gifting daily: 20-40 active friends is usually enough to fill the 30-gift opening cap most days, run several Best Friend Lucky Friends rolls in parallel, and always have someone awake for a raid - without the list filling up with dead weight. Players chasing Vivillon or stacking Forever Friends for remote trading often keep a larger list on purpose, since those goals need breadth (specific countries, many 90-day clocks) rather than daily throughput.
If your list is already packed with friends who never gift back, see how to prune the cap the right way before adding more.
FAQ
Is there a minimum number of friends to unlock anything? No single-player feature requires a friend count - even one active friend lets you gift, trade and raid. Weekly Challenges need a group of up to 4, and matchmaking can fill that for you.
Does having more friends slow anything down? Not directly, but a full 550-650-slot list blocks new requests and referral redemptions until you prune it.
What's better: a few Best Friends or many Good Friends? Best Friends for Stardust savings and Lucky Friends rolls; a wider spread of Good/Great Friends for country variety and Vivillon postcards. Most active players end up with both.
Where do I find more active friends to round out my list? One tap on the front page gives a fresh, unused trainer code, and codes by country let you target specific regions for Vivillon or raid-timezone coverage.
