Do gifts from other countries give different eggs or items in Pokémon GO?

🧳3 min read · Updated

Short answer: no. A gift's contents - its items, Stardust, and chance of a 7 km Egg - are the same no matter which country sent it. The postcard that comes with every gift records where it was spun, but that location doesn't change what's inside. The only thing a foreign postcard unlocks is Vivillon pattern progress, not better loot.

It's an easy myth to pick up: trainers chase international friends specifically for what their gifts unlock, so it's natural to assume the gift itself is somehow upgraded. It isn't - the upgrade is the postcard, not the parcel.

What's actually in a gift

Every gift draws from the same pool regardless of origin: Poké Balls, Potions and Revives, Pinap Berries, Stardust, occasionally an evolution item, and - if you have an open Egg slot - a chance at a 7 km Egg, which gifts are the only regular source of. See the full gifts & postcards guide for the exact send/open limits. Nothing in the gift's structure branches on country - a gift spun at a PokéStop in Oslo and one spun in Osaka pull from the identical pool.

What the postcard actually changes

The postcard attached to a gift shows the real-world Photo Disc where it was collected. That location is what feeds the Vivillon Collector medal: pinning postcards from a region unlocks that region's Scatterbug pattern (3 pinned for the first encounter, 9 for the second, 15 for the third). That's the entire reason international friends matter for gifting - see our Vivillon patterns guide for the full mechanic.

The postcard doesn't touch the gift's item pool, its Stardust amount, or its odds of including an Egg. Those are the same whether the postcard says Norway or New Zealand.

Don't confuse this with regional Pokémon

A friend abroad can eventually get you an actual region-exclusive Pokémon like Farfetch'd or Kangaskhan - but that happens through trading, not gifting, and it's gated behind Forever Friends and a 100 m range or a 180-day friendship clock. See regional Pokémon via friends for the honest breakdown. Gifts and their postcards are a completely separate, much faster system.

FAQ

So why bother with friends from specific countries at all? For the postcards themselves, which drive Vivillon - not for better gift contents. Browse codes by country if a particular region's pattern is what you're missing.

Does a gift from a friend who lives far away have better odds of containing a 7 km Egg? No - the Egg chance depends only on whether you have an empty Egg slot when you open the gift, not on where it came from.

Does the postcard itself count as a prize? Only indirectly - pinning it is what progresses the Vivillon medal. The postcard has no Stardust or item value of its own.

Can I tell where a gift came from before opening it? No - the postcard only appears after you open the gift, at which point you can choose whether to pin it.
