The two silent failure modes
These cause the vast majority of "it's just not working" reports, and neither one shows an error message:
- Their friend list is full. Pokémon GO caps out around 550-650 friends — a popular code gets more requests than the account has room for, and new ones simply can't land.
- Their pending-request queue is full. Niantic also caps how many unaccepted incoming requests an account can hold at once. If you see "This Trainer has too many pending Friend Requests," that's it exactly. Even without that message, a request can sit unseen and then quietly expire after 7 days.

Before assuming it's the other side: check your input
- Re-check the 12 digits. A single mistyped digit sends the request to a real, different trainer (or to no one) — it won't error, it'll just go nowhere useful.

If the app itself seems stuck
A smaller number of cases really are a client/server sync hiccup rather than either trainer's list or queue. Commonly reported (not officially documented) fixes worth trying, in order of least to most disruptive:
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Make sure you're on the latest app version — a version mismatch with a server-side update can cause social features to misbehave.
- Toggle your online status off and back on (tap the Niantic logo on your Trainer Profile).
