Does catching a Pokémon near a friend count as a friendship interaction in Pokémon GO?

🎣3 min read · Updated

Short answer: no. Niantic's own help center lists exactly five things that earn a friendship point - opening or sending a Gift, trading, raiding or battling in a Gym together, a Trainer Battle (PvP), and Weekly Challenges. Catching a Pokémon, even the same one at the same time as a friend standing next to you, isn't on that list and does nothing for your friendship level.

It's an easy assumption to make - you're playing together, so it feels like it should count. But Pokémon GO's friendship system doesn't track location or timing between two trainers' catches at all. It only logs specific, shared actions.

What actually moves the friendship needle

Niantic's help center is explicit about this: friendship points come from "completing activities like opening gifts or participating in Raid Battles," and progress toward milestones comes from battling, trading, and sending or opening Gifts. The full list, once per friend per day:

See our friendship levels & XP guide for the point math and XP payouts behind each one. Catching isn't on this list in any official source, old or current.

Why catching doesn't count, even "together"

The other four interactions all have one thing in common: they're actions the game logs between two specific trainer accounts - a gift sent to someone, a trade confirmed with someone, a raid lobby or Gym battle shared with someone. A catch is purely personal. The game has no concept of "we caught this at the same time" or "we were standing next to each other" - it just adds the Pokémon to your own Pokédex and gives you your own XP and Candy. There's no shared record for friendship to attach to.

This also means Community Day catch bonuses, catch-streak bonuses, and catching the exact same spawn as a friend a second apart are all equally irrelevant to your friendship level with them.

What standing near a friend actually unlocks

Proximity matters for a few other things in Pokémon GO, just not catching:

None of these are triggered by catching - they're their own separate interactions you still have to do.

FAQ

Does it matter if we're both catching the same spawn? No. Each catch is logged to one account only; there's no mechanic that links two trainers' catches together.

Do Community Day's catch bonuses give bonus friendship points? No - Community Day's bonuses apply to catch XP, Stardust and Candy. The friendship system only reacts to gifts, trades, raids, battles and Weekly Challenges, event or not.

If we raid together, does the catch after the raid count separately? No extra credit - the raid battle itself is what earns the friendship point. Catching the raid boss afterward (or not) doesn't change that.

What's the easiest interaction to actually log a point if we're not near each other? Sending or opening a Gift - it works at any distance. See our 2-minute daily routine for the simplest way to keep it going every day.
