Short answer: Pokémon GO's own friend list only offers "Remove Friend," but Niantic's documented Block and Report tools live in Campfire's profile menu - and because Campfire shares one friends list with Pokémon GO, using them there also covers the friendship on your Pokémon GO side. Blocking goes further than unfriending: it stops the person from messaging you, viewing your profile, or adding you back at all. Reporting just flags them to Niantic's moderation team.

How do you block or report a Pokémon GO friend without unfriending them?
A friend who's gifting fine but getting uncomfortable to deal with isn't the same problem as a dead friend slot - sometimes you want them gone and unable to come back, or you want Niantic to know about their behavior without touching the friendship at all. Pokémon GO's in-game Friends list doesn't give you those tools directly. Here's where they actually live.
Three separate actions, one profile menu
Niantic's Campfire help center documents three distinct options, all reachable from a person's profile (tap their picture in Groups, chats, Flare Chat or a post, then the three dots in the top right):
- Remove Friend - ends the friendship. It's silent (no notification to either side) and, per Niantic's help center, syncs everywhere: removing a friend in one Niantic app removes them from every other Niantic app you both use, Pokémon GO included. See why a friend disappears from your list for the full mechanics of that sync.
- Block - a harder stop. Niantic's help center lists what it prevents the blocked person from
doing: adding you as a friend, messaging you or sending message requests, seeing your profile,
interacting with you in Groups or Flare Chat, inviting you to a Meetup, and seeing your posts
- even public ones. The exact wording, that they "will not be able to message you or add you back as a friend," implies the friendship itself ends as part of blocking, though Niantic's page doesn't spell that out as a separate, explicit step.
- Report - doesn't touch the friendship at all. It "creates a ticket for our moderation team to review and take appropriate actions on a case-by-case basis," per Niantic's help center. You can report a person from their profile, report an individual message by tapping and holding it, or report an entire text channel.
You can block or report a current friend the same way as a stranger - Niantic's help page is explicit that this applies "even if they are your friend."
Why this lives in Campfire, not the Pokémon GO app
Pokémon GO's own Trainer Profile screen only exposes "Remove Friend" - there's no documented Block or Report button inside the Pokémon GO app itself. That's consistent with how the two apps divide labor: Pokémon GO has no direct messaging, so there's nothing in-app for a block to stop, while Campfire is where Niantic put chat, Meetups and the moderation tools that go with them. Since Campfire and Pokémon GO share one Niantic Friends list, blocking someone in Campfire still protects you on the Pokémon GO side of the relationship - you're just doing it from the app that has the button.
What about muting?
There's no Campfire or Pokémon GO "mute a person" option in Niantic's documentation. A mute feature does exist in Niantic's help center, but it's documented for Monster Hunter Now's chat (muting a conversation, not a user) - it isn't confirmed for Campfire or Pokémon GO, so don't rely on it being there if you're hoping to go quiet on someone without blocking them outright.
FAQ
Does blocking someone also remove them as a Pokémon GO friend? Niantic's wording strongly implies it, since it says a blocked person can't "add you back" - but Niantic's help center never states this as a separate, explicit consequence. Treat the friendship as effectively over either way: a blocked person can't message you, see your profile, or re-add you.
Can I report someone without blocking or unfriending them? Yes - reporting is a separate action that only creates a review ticket for Niantic's moderation team. It doesn't change your friend list.
Will the other person know I blocked or reported them? Niantic's help center doesn't say either action sends a notification, and removing a friend is explicitly silent - there's no confirmation of a block or report alert either.
I just want a dead friend slot back, not to block anyone - what do I do? Use plain "Remove Friend" instead; see managing a full friend list for when that's worth doing.
Where do I find a replacement friend code after removing or blocking someone? The front page gives you a fresh, unused trainer code with one tap, or browse by country if you're rebuilding your list with a specific region in mind.
